Mitch's Media Musings - Oct. 2019

Mitch's Media Musings

Sept. 16 - Oct. 15, 2019

So I don't know what's up this month, but I've noted four new babies born in the last two weeks.

A typo on my part last month. Shon Gables has been named evening anchor (not evening editor). Sorry Shon!

Not specifically Atlanta, but the Waycross Journal-Herald has ceased publication at 105 years. Details: https://tinyurl.com/y2m4lqtt.

Appen Media - Congrats to Hans Appen on the birth of his new daughter!

Atlanta Press Club

  • The APC has kicked off a job search for the next president of the organization. Here's the job description: https://atlantapressclub.org/jobs/atlanta-press-club-president/. If you're interested, or know someone who'd be great at the job, email MaryLynn Ryan at MaryLynnRyan6@gmail.com.

  • Oct. 17 - APS Superindendent Meria Carstarphen speaks

  • Oct. 21 - Program focused on national reporter's covering the South

  • Nov. 7 - APC Hall of Fame Dinner

Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) - SPJ Georgia is seeking four new board members to serve in 2020-2021. Details: https://tinyurl.com/y6yeoxuq. Continuing on into 2020 are treasurer Pam Dorsett, secretary KC Wildmoon, student representative Charlotte Norsworthy, and at-large members Stell Simonton and Brenda Goodman.

GABBY Awards - Congrats to all the winners in this year's GABBY Awards. They were awarded on Sept.28. They don't have the winners listed, but it'll probably be here: https://www.gab.org/gabbys/. We don't usually highlight any one journalist when so many win, but this time I'm making an exception. Congrats to WSB Radio's Pete Combs, who received the award for "Best Reporter, Radio Class A." Pete was diagnosed with cancer recently and is being treated. All thoughts, prayers, influence with doctors, insurance companies, and higher powers is appreciated.

Atlanta Journal-Constitution

  • Newsmakers - Got a new hire or promotion? Bill Hendrick is the man to talk to! He's got a new email, though, so check out his info in the Leff's Atlanta Media database. He likes to get just a few lines about new hires and promotions. No need to send the whole press release! Also, make sure to send a color, high resolution, photo.

Atlanta Small Business Network - We've added this online TV show to the Leff's Atlanta Media database.

Current Hub - Carolyn Kutney is the editor.

Georgia Public Radio

  • MaryLynn Ryan joins as Vice President of News.

WABE - Alan Helmick joins as Managing Editor.

WAGA-TV/Fox5

  • Congrats to Ryan Beesley on the birth of his daughter!

  • Emilie Ikeda moves over to Good Day Atlanta.

WGCL-TV/CBS46

  • A typo on my part last month. Shon Gables has been named evening anchor (not evening editor).

  • The Sept 22 edition of "Public Affairs on Peach" was the last edition of the show. Anchor Karyn Greer broke the news at the end of the show. We asked CBS46 News Director Steve Doerr about the changes. He said "the traditional Sunday morning public affairs show is a bit of an outdated notion. We think we can more effectively address issues and events by integrating that coverage into our daily content across our many platforms. With that said, if something comes up that would be best presented in a longer form format, we have the flexibility and the time period."

  • Congrats to Astrid Martinez who won a RICE Award this month! The Rising In Community Excellence award (RICE) celebrates individuals demonstrating awareness of the community and who step into the fray and lend a hand in helping make life better for citizens.

  • CSI Atlanta Podcast

WGST Radio

  • Dana Barrett has left the station.

  • The station is now a Fox News Radio affiliate.

WSB TV

  • Lauren Davis joins as general assignment reporter. She was with KGTV in San Diego.

WXIA-TV/11Alive

  • Congrats to Cara Kneer on the birth of her daughter!

  • Thomas Goodhew has a new role. He's moved out of sports. His new job is Sales Integrations and Major Projects Manager. He'll be finding ways to integrate client products into newscasts etc. Sponsorships, etc. also...Olympics.Mitch

  • The A Scene Awards are set for Oct 21 at 11 am

  • Jeremy Campbell departs for a position with WBIR Channel 10 in Knoxville. He'll be their new News Director!

News from the PR Dept.

  • Congrats to GDOT's Natalie Dale on the birth of her new son!
