Olympic Update

We had a number of Atlanta media in South Korea covering the Winter Olympics. Let us know if we missed anyone!

Awards

  • Writer Jeanne Bonner won PEN's 2018 Grant for the English Translation of Italian Literature for a novel published by Mariateresa Di Lascia in 1995.

Books

  • Former radio reporter Connie Cummings (WGST, WYAY, CNN Radio) has a new book our (her third). "A Daffodil for Angie" is available at the Eagle Eye Book Shop in Decatur.

  • Mark Maguire has the third book in his trilogy, "Alexandria Redeemed," available on Amazon.

  • Writer Echo Garrett and co-author Mark Green (Lt. Col. retired US Army) were featured on Parade.com for their latest book project, focused on helping veterans and their families with transition. Their books STEP OUT, STEP UP: Lessons Learned from a Lifetime of Transitions and Military Service and Warrior’s Code 001 were also named the Books of the Month pick for November 2018 by Kathy L. Murphy, founder of the Pulpwood Queens, the largest meeting and discussing book club in the world with 750+ chapters. STEP OUT, STEP UP was named a Top 10 #readtolead book by a senior vice president of HarperCollins for 2017, and the video featuring the book went viral, racking up more than 264,000 views. They're currently working on curriculum to help with resiliency and smoother transitions to civilian life.

Atlanta Inno - Check out this new publication, which will offer "editorial on the people, businesses, trends and topics that are shaping the city’s innovation economy." This is a sister pub to Atlanta Business Chronicle.

  • Melissa Hall departs the paper. She's now Managing Editor of Audience and Programming for NCAA.com and PGA.com at Turner.

  • Bert Roughton has left the building.

  • The paper has discontinued the weekly "Doing Good" column written by Devika Rao.

  • Pam Miller now handling the Bragbook and County by County news.

  • Arlinda Broady is now covering Gwinnett education.

Bitter Southerner - Writer Adina Solomon writes this month about the Atlantic Coast Pipeline, a 594-mile natural gas line, and how it will run from West Virginia to a terminus in Robeson County, North Carolina — the ancestral land of the Lumbee tribe, the largest Native American community east of the Mississippi River. Georgia Public Broadcasting

  • Sean Powers has been promoted at GPB to be the station's first-ever director of podcasting. He'll be staying with the On Second Thought team for the next month or two, and then transitioning into his new role.

  • Ellen Eldridge joins at Digital Producer. She was previously with the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Marietta Daily Journal - The MDJ won the "Triple Crown" from the Associated Press Sports Editors. The paper writes "The section earned the prestigious “Triple Crown” honor for having a top-10 daily section, Sunday section and special section in its circulation category at the annual Associated Press Sports Editors’ winter conference held at the Poynter Institute in St. Petersburg, Florida.

  • Former staff Gary Franklin died this month. He was a reporter editor and assignment desk editor and retired from the station.   • Sports reporter Kim Smith departs for San Francisco for a job with KRON-TV.
